Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Is an anxiety disorder experienced by some individuals when they are exposed to a traumatic life event such as sexual assault, violence, combat, traffic accidents or other threats to personal safety. Symptoms fall into three categories of intrusive perceptions (thoughts, feelings, images, sounds), avoidance behaviors and symptoms of increased arousal. Intrusive perceptions may include recurrent, distressing recollections, distressing dreams, re-experiencing via flashbacks and hallucinations and intense distress at internal or external cues.
